Delivery and Customer Service for Small Businesses: Keep Customers Coming Back
Winning a customer costs effort and money. Keeping one is cheaper and brings referrals. Good delivery and service are how you keep them.
Promise only what you can do
Give a realistic delivery time and add a little buffer. Delivering a day early feels great; a day late loses trust. If something changes, tell the customer before they ask.
Pack with care
- Use clean, strong packaging.
- Protect fragile items.
- Add a small thank-you note with your shop name.
- Double-check the item and quantity before it leaves.
Communicate at each step
- Confirm the order and the amount.
- Tell them when it is on its way.
- Ask them to confirm once received.
- Follow up a few days later to ask how it is going.
Handle problems calmly
Things sometimes go wrong. Listen first, apologise sincerely and offer a clear fix: a replacement, a partial refund or a credit, in line with the delivery and returns policy. A calm, fair response often turns an unhappy buyer into your biggest fan.
Ask for feedback and referrals
Happy customers are your best marketing. Ask them politely to share their experience, and thank every person who refers a friend.
Keep a simple list of your repeat customers and message them when you get something new that suits them.
